Artist's Comments

i love taking pictures in times of transition. like sunrise, or sunset. the light is just sooo much more interesting.

i took this shot at dusk, on Capitol Hill in Seattle (the alternative/punk/artsy neigborhood). there's always event posters up on every available street corner. I can't even tell what most of them are for half the time, but hey make for some pretty cool scenery.

that's a great idea, "taking photos at transition"! I'd love more dawn photos if I could get out of bed early enough.

I love the way you photoed the posters, that you only showed part of the powerline pole (I assume that's what those posters are stuck on?), otherwise I imagine it'd be too clattered. beautiful lighting, it must have been difficult given the available light (or lack of).

yeah. i'm never up at dawn anymore. i used to have to get up at about 5:30 to take the bus to work, but then i got a job where i didn't have to be there as early and i bought a car, so i didn't have to take the but anymore.

for sunset i just start taking pictures just at dusk before the sun goes doewn and keep wandering around snapping stuff until they don't come out anymore.

thanks. i figured it just wouldn't be particularly interesting if i only put the posters in the frame, so i always put them off to the side or give it an interesting angle. yes, it's a power line. once i collected the posters so that i could make a book out of the photos with them. it was cool.

First of all let me say :w00t: for your comment about the more interesting light at transition hours and this shot is taken exactly at my favourite time of the day to capture the urban ambiance. Mixing the dusk light with the artificial lights makes the colours come out in a stunning way and adding the reflections and the shadows. I think the composition is really well made and the very sharp focus on the posters is beautiful, they are so vivid and with lots of detail and shadows that make them almost pop out of the image. The depth is achieved with all the rest being slightly blured but not to the point of loosing any significant information. So i would say: perfect! And always my 'suggestion' ;) : without changing anything on the left crop i wish the image had more space to the right in order to include more of the building facade and the shop in it, would it be possible, i don't know i wasn't there. Your choice of the border colour is interesting as it is the only colour not present in the image except for the boot detail in the poster though a bit more dark than the one you used and that would be my suggestion too. What do you think? ;P
Dusk :hug:s , I'll be back tomorrow, here at the kfc, same hour, send me a reminder if i'm too late for the date ;)
:iconsquirrelqueen:
hmmm. i dunno, the shop on the corner is a bicykle(sp?) shop, and they had all their lights on, so i think it probably would have just been ditracting. the building's really cool though, it's an old turn of the century brick facade apt. building. if that shop with the lighted window hadn't been there, i would have put more of it in the frame.
thanks for all the compliments though! i don't know if i'll be around tomorrow night though, since i have homework for my carpentry class that i've gotta get done. i'll try and see though. ;D
:iconskieswatcher:
As i said, i doubted, and i agree with you then (silly me, of course you made the crop that way for some reason). Don't worry, i'll be around here, i wont go anywhere ;P

ooh! i love this one! the light is just perfect! really love those posters up there, the light gives such a nice effect on those! love the 1/2 1/2 effect in the compo!
